    SKS project

I almost have all required components to assemble. This is a sporter SKS, meaning Norinco bitched it out with a 16 inch barrel and exported it to the US. Since this rifle came to me without any furniture it is my opportunity to bring it back to life.

    Catchup time:

First thing first, accumount side scope mount was added, this is permanent solution being drill and tap is required.
Scope is a Nikon P223 that seems to get good reviews. Time will tell.

I will not change the magazine or capacity. Works fine.

Stock, trigger, firing pin to think about, read about. Any Opinions? Experience with Chaote stock?

I would love to own an SKS and that would be the one I got for if I ever got a firearms license. This thread is going to inspire me to apply for one!
    Looking awesome!

For me, the SKS design and simplicity is what drew me in, once I shot it I knew this particular make is special. No screws to remove for takedown, love the tilt bolt. People worry about slam fires but if you keep your rifle clean no issues at all.

Now that they are banned from import, supplies dry up fast. If you do get one follow up and buy spare parts and have the stashed. Trigger group, bolt group and gas tube are getting thin. Different countries may not be compatible with others.

Although the AK robbed the SKS of its day in the sunshine in my opinion the SKS is superior in every way but capacity. Capacity was the SKS downfall with the 10 round fixed mag and stripper clips. One can get quite proficient and fast using the stripper clips and not having the bulky magazines to tote around makes life good. I load up several Chinese SKS bandolier chest rigs and when you put them side by side with 5.56 magazines loaded with the same amount of ammo the bulk comparison is worth noting.

Yugoslavia gets a bad rap but really enjoy them. The fit and finish is prime and they shoot straight. No chrome in the barrel does not effect it if you shoot clean rounds. The grenade launcher with a tennis ball is a blast to play with wind age and arch. people complain about how heavy it is and I don't understand why. That extra weight really shines with follow up shots.

The Russian ones I own are all arsenal refurbished and to me that means 'New'. Think about it. A new milled rifle built in 1952 for $100.00 dollars. Milled. Not stamped metal. Today the milled Russian can fetch well over $1000.00 in the market. And the laminate stocks are beautiful..

Beware of the SKS snobs also, remind them that a peasant was the intended operator.

Ok, let's get this thing rolling. I give this forum permission to use my SKS project and content. I am doing this project as a private citizen and in no way giving legal advice or have authority This project will be in compliance IAW regulating authorities within the jurisdiction that I reside.

Really no smitty work but just exchanging parts outside the drill and tap for the scope and mount. Ok, need to post some detailed pics, with the SKS broken down, sometime this afternoon. I will also attach the websites to each component installed so you can get the technical data instead of me relaying and unnecessary typing if this is allowed. I am aware that certain components that will be installed my not be available in home country do to law and import restrictions.

I purchased this SKS locally. It is a Chinese SKS from arsenal 906 located inside a triangle stamped on the receiver. My other stock SKS's in the chinese model are of factory 26 which can be dated to manufacturing year. Once you get away from arsenal 26 it is very difficult to date it since Com block countries did not share this information and still do not. This Sks is all matching serial numbers and not forced match.

Force match is when parts not original are electro penciled with the original serial number once a weapon is repaired or refurbished. This is not a bad thing unless you are a collector or purist......look at it as brand new. If you want a shooter do not turn your nose up to a refurbished SKS, they run beautifully. In the beginning I purchased arsenal refurbished SKS because gun snobs wanted original which in return commanded a lower price, so I would get a few just to have spare parts, I did the same with the Mosin carbine's.

With the Chinese I do not know the number of arsenals that produced the SKS but I do know it was many, which lends to its mystery. So many pics and videos on the webz about the SKS I will keep it simple. If you want a pic of a particular area of the weapon just ask and I will do my best. This includes Russian and Yugoslavian also. I own no rare SKS and purchased them with shooting in mind.....except the Russian ones. The Russian SKS's are queens that get glove treatment and have never been fired since rearsenal.

Lets pay honor to the one and only before we begin with a clone project. The Russian SKS for whom the 7.62x39 round was invented for. This is a 1952 arsenal refurbished, new and shiny with laminate stock. The only force match was the gas tube and stock. All I do is clean it twice a year and admire it and the proof stamps, tradesmen stamps, QC stamps. What is nice about Milsurp weapons is reading about particular battles while holding, cleaning the weapons which I do often. History is very important with Milsurp freaks. This rifle is 10 years older than me yet looks like it was made today.

At the time of purchased it cost 180.00 dollars. Again we are talking about a milled riffle. Milled receiver. Wartime pushed arsenals to go faster and cheaper so stamping sheet metal was introduced out of necessity.
